The front page article this morning immediately grabbed my attention, “Crossing Over, and Over”. The little boy in the picture with his stuffed unicorn just showed his innocence and his lack of control over his freedom in America and it broke my heart! Illegal immigration is a topic we’ve been studying in my Spanish class ever since the beginning of the semester, and this article just reminded me of the movie “Which Way Home” – a documentary following teenage boys and young children as they illegally immigrate to America.
Anyways, according to the article the new laws now has stricter punishments and regulations for illegal immigrants and are deporting more immigrants back to Mexico than ever – it costs so much money! Why not educate Mexicans about the state of the American economy instead, and save everyone’s time so the immigrants won’t even try to get in? I don’t think that immigrants are aware that our economy is so bad; they have a skewed view of America and to them, our country only means freedom and happiness. I don’t think they could be more wrong.
Also, the article “Let Pupils and Teachers Cash In” reminded me of a scenario when I was in high school. One day in History class, my teacher told the class she would give $50 to anyone who got an “A” on the next test. My class excitedly worked hard all period, determined to get paid. At the end of class my teacher said she wasn’t really going to do that; her point was to make a statement about something related to corruption of the government in history (I don’t really remember). At a high school in Worcester, this is actually happening!!! If kids pass the AP test, they get $100. Sure, it’s promoting kids to work harder and raising the percentage of high scores on the AP tests…should the students be getting paid for something they already should be doing? Working hard? Where was my $100 when I passed my AP tests? I am absolutely disgusted and shocked.
