NY Times Thursday, October 13

In this paper, there seemed to be a theme of race. The profile that started on the front page, “In Strangers’ Glances”, I found to be extremely interesting, pertaining to many people in our society and it made me excited to do a profile for class because I had been thinking of doing a similar topic with race. I couldn’t believe the stories that the Greenwood family told Susan Saulny, the writer. There were many, many examples of racism and discrimination that they have experienced in their lives, just because their family contains mixed races, like Korean, African American, and Costa Rican. I thought creating an actual family tree next to the article was a good way for readers to visually see the racial differences between the families.
The article on the front page, “Unlikely Turn for a Suspect” also caught my eye and I loved the introduction of the accused man as a “Scarface”, describing his physical appearance and demeanor – it just added so much depth to the lead and to the article as a whole! I found it unusual that the writer took the points of views of neighbors, friends, and a past roommate – there was not any police or official authority interviewed.
