NY Times Reading Log 10/31-11/4

It was interesting how the article about the snowstorm on the front page was written in general terms for the first part, and then got specific in the second, rather than doing the traditional summary leads that we’ve been studying. Because the first part was so general, talking about customers in stores, people without power, a wedding that was ruined, all because of the storm, it showed how many people and how deeply everyone was affected by the storm. The focus was more on how Halloween was ruined, too, instead of the deaths and thousands of people without power.
I also loved the profile about New York City runner Buzunesh Deba, who could possibly be one of the top runners in the world. Her life is running and training for events, and her husband is her trainer. He quit his job to help her, and they earn money through races that she wins. I found this style of life absolutely astonishing, especially because I ran cross country for three years and it is possibly one of the most excruciatingly painful sports. I can’t imagine my career relying on cross country racing!

The two front page articles that caught my attention was “Cain Confronts Claim from ‘90s of Harassment” and “Homeless Stake a Claim at Protests”. I am disgusted at the media attention that this sexual harassment charge is getting. People should focus on the campaign, and which candidate will better serve our country, instead of digging up old, irrelevant happenings. Does this charge really have an effect on the presidency?
I found the article about the homeless people in Los Angeles very interesting; the reporter did a good job of talking to protestors who did not mind the homeless people staying with them because it “added to their voice” and others who simply thought they were an interruption. The journalist was also able to interview a homeless person, who couldn’t be happier with the free clothes, food, and shelter. The picture captured of the homeless man sleeping under rally signs in LA on the front page is an eye catcher and basically summed up the whole article.

The Times definitely had interesting articles today. It was so disheartening to read the story about police investigators framing people for crimes to meet arrest quotas! The last thing our country needs right now is to worry about liars in our police force, who we should be putting all of our trust in. That means innocent people are serving jail time right now, and it’s completely unjust and disgusting to think about.
On the brighter side, there is a new dating app on the iPhone, which I think is slightly pathetic. If you’re looking for a date on a Friday or Saturday night, you can search for singles in your area looking to do the same. In my opinion, this can be extremely dangerous if the wrong people get on the application. It even presents the same problems as we’ve seen on the internet with internet predators on instant message, Facebook, and MySpace.
